When
a flood destroyed the first Soquel sawmill in the mid-1840s, a
second one was built on higher ground. It later became a gristmill
and tannery. In 1879, the South Coast Paper Mill was established
on the same site. The mill eventually reached a daily capacity
of 3.5 tons of straw wrapping paper.
